Why should we invest in philanthropic causes in a down economy? Because now is when the courage of our convictions to create a more humane world matters most.

A faltering economy leads to a worsening environment of neglect for our society’s most vulnerable — the children and animals who rely on our commitment to the social contract to ensure their well-being and protection.

Looking over the past year, we can be proud that we’ve reduced child abuse and strengthened America’s families. But we also see a dramatic rise in cases of child neglect, the complexities of which exacerbate our overburdened child welfare systems and local communities. We have also rescued animals in crisis at alarming numbers — from Haiti to Arkansas, Mississippi to Colorado. As I write this, we are part of a coalition in Arkansas rescuing 116 neglected horses. And, we have celebrated American hero dogs — and cats, a miniature horse and a guinea pig — through our Animal-Assisted Therapy program, impacting children, military veterans and our sick and elderly.

Economic crisis goes hand-in-hand with neglect, and rest assured that we have not relented in our pursuit to protect our most vulnerable and neglected. At American Humane Association, we will not rest this holiday season, as we have much more to do. Will you join us in our quest to build a more compassionate America?

Our best wishes to you for the holiday season, and our gratitude for your support in these challenging times.
